Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis Pilaris Skin Condition

Keratosis Pilaris is a harmless skin condition that causes clusters of rough, reddened, raised bumps on the skin, often found on the tops of arm, legs and buttocks. The 'bumpy rash' is not itchy, or uncomfortable and is not contagious, however sufferers experience frustration by its persistent and visible presence.

This condition commonly begins in adolescence and usually disappears on its own in early adulthood. It can run in families, especially those with genetic links to Eczema.

Keratosis Pilaris develops when the skin produces excess keratin, which becomes built up blocking the hair follicles. This leads to a 'plug' forming, creating a bump appearance, often with a hair being trapped inside.

When treating this skin condition holistically, it is important to address internal factors such as inflammation, allergies, food sensitivities and hormone imbalances as they all have significant negative effects on the normal functioning of the skin and can also directly impact on Keratosis Pilaris.

3 Common Food Triggers of Keratosis Pilaris

Gluten - an intolerance or sensitivity to gluten is very common for many skin conditions, including Keratosis Pilaris. Gluten is a known gut disruptor for many people, which contributes to an increase of internal inflammation, leaky gut syndrome and this can then lead to the body's inability to efficiently absorb required nutrients.

Refined Sugars - very similarly to gluten, an excess of processed and refined sugars from poorer dietary choices can also lead to an increase of internal inflammation. Refined sugars can negatively impact not only on gut health, but also plays havoc with hormone balance and can directly damage and break down key structures within the skin, including collagen fibers, leading to less vibrant and resilient skin health.

Dairy - sensitivities to dairy can cause many skin irritations including Acne, Eczema and Keratosis Pilaris. Whey and casein proteins are found within all dairy products and although very necessary for providing the building blocks of cells of the skin and body, high populations simply cannot tolerate these proteins well and for them, can lead to a weaker lining of the gut and therefore negative internal and skin symptoms.

Investigating individual food intolerances, whilst also ensuring your skin barrier is in it its best condition and treating Keratosis Pilaris topically with regular exfoliation and hydration will assist the severity and appearance of this skin condition.
